The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has recovered KSh65.3 million in cash from the residence of a senior Nairobi County government official during a raid linked to an ongoing corruption investigation.
According to the anti-graft agency, officers conducted a search at the Syokimau residence of Patrick Analo Akivaga, the Chief Officer for Urban Development and Planning in Nairobi County, on Thursday as part of investigations into an alleged corruption syndicate.
EACC alleges that Akivaga has been receiving millions of shillings through cash transactions and M-Pesa deposits, resulting in the accumulation of assets that are disproportionate to his known legitimate sources of income.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the commission said the operation led to the discovery of approximately KSh65.3 million concealed inside the boot of a vehicle parked at the residence.
The recovered cash included KSh51.3 million in Kenyan currency and USD130,000, estimated at about KSh14 million, bringing the total amount recovered to over KSh65 million.
Investigators also seized several documents and items believed to be relevant to the probe. These included title deeds, motor vehicle logbooks, laptops, electronic devices, land sale agreements, motor vehicle sale agreements, and development approval plans associated with the county government.
The commission said the recovered materials will form part of evidence being analyzed as investigations continue into suspected corruption and unexplained wealth.
EACC noted that appropriate legal and administrative action will be taken once the investigations are completed and all evidence reviewed.
The latest development underscores the commission's ongoing efforts to combat corruption in public institutions and recover assets believed to have been acquired through illicit means. The case is expected to attract significant public attention as investigators seek to establish the source of the funds and determine whether any criminal conduct occurred.
