The Kenyan government has announced significant changes in the leadership of two key ministries, immediately transferring responsibilities between senior officials in a move seen as part of broader efforts to stabilize the education sector and strengthen oversight in public service delivery. Under the new arrangement, Prof. Julius Bitok has been moved from the State Department of Basic Education, where he served as Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Education, to the Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife, where he will now oversee the State Department of Tourism.
In a corresponding appointment, John Lekakeny Ololtuaa, who previously served as the Principal Secretary in the State Department of Tourism, has been reassigned to the Ministry of Education to take over leadership of the State Department of Basic Education. The changes take effect immediately and are expected to influence policy direction in both ministries at a sensitive time.
The reshuffle comes against the backdrop of rising tensions in the education sector, where recent unrest in high schools has resulted in the closure of at least 200 learning institutions across the country. The situation has been further compounded by a tragic fire at Utumishi Girls Academy in Gilgil, which claimed the lives of 16 learners, intensifying public concern over school safety and administrative preparedness.
Observers note that the timing of the changes reflects the urgency with which the government is attempting to address systemic challenges in the education sector, particularly around student safety, discipline, and institutional management.
