The Ministry of Education has confirmed that the Term Two mid-term break for schools across the country will proceed as scheduled, putting to rest speculation about possible changes to the academic calendar amid growing concerns over student welfare and school unrest.

Speaking on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, Education Cabinet Secretary Migos Ogamba announced that learners will proceed for the mid-term break from June 24 to June 28, 2026, in line with the official school calendar.

“The mid-term break for the Second Term of the 2026 School Year will take place as scheduled, from 24th June, 2026 to 28th June, 2026,” Ogamba stated.

The Cabinet Secretary encouraged parents and guardians to take advantage of the break to spend quality time with their children and provide the guidance and support necessary for their well-being and development.

“Parents and guardians are urged to use the break to spend time with their children and to provide guidance and support to them. Any grievances or concerns should be articulated appropriately and shared with schools and other relevant authorities for action,” he said.

The announcement comes at a time when the education sector has faced increased scrutiny following incidents of unrest in several schools across the country, prompting calls for stronger intervention measures to address learner concerns.

As part of efforts to improve student welfare, the Ministry has directed schools to urgently engage parents through consultative forums aimed at reviewing the state of affairs in learning institutions.

“Schools shall urgently convene consultative Parents Association meetings to review the state of affairs and learner welfare in their respective schools,” the Ministry directed.

The Ministry also instructed school administrators to strengthen safety systems and improve mechanisms for addressing student grievances.

According to the directive, schools are expected to intensify guidance and counselling programmes while ensuring learners have accessible channels through which they can raise concerns.

“Schools shall strengthen safety measures and address any concerns and grievances that learners may have raised. Schools shall also intensify guidance and counselling programmes and strengthen learner-grievance handling mechanisms,” the Ministry stated.

Additionally, County and Sub-County Education Offices have been tasked with enhancing oversight of schools through targeted inspections and risk assessments, particularly in institutions considered vulnerable to unrest or safety challenges.

“County and Sub-County Education Offices shall undertake targeted safety assessments and audits and monitor institutions considered to be at risk,” the directive added.

The Ministry's latest measures are part of a broader effort to promote safer learning environments, improve communication between students, parents and school administrators, and prevent incidents that may disrupt learning.
