Amisi plans new movement, says Linda Mwananchi lost its way

Saboti MP Caleb Amisi has announced plans to form a new political movement, saying Linda Mwananchi has drifted from the ideals that inspired its formation.

Speaking during an interview on Wednesday, Mr Amisi said the movement, which emerged as a youth-driven platform advocating governance reforms and political accountability, had lost its original direction.

“The Linda Mwananchi did not understand its initial assignment and has deviated from its original course. That is why I want to form a new movement that will continue with the struggle,” he said.

Mr Amisi said the proposed movement would focus on identifying and supporting credible candidates for Parliament ahead of the 2027 General Election.

According to the legislator, the aim is to build a Parliament capable of effectively overseeing the Executive and holding leaders accountable.

The remarks mark the clearest sign yet of a fallout within Linda Mwananchi, a political pressure group that rose to prominence following the anti-government protests and growing public dissatisfaction with the Kenya Kwanza administration.

The movement was launched in 2025 by a group of opposition leaders led by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, Mumias East MP Peter Salasya and Mr Amisi among others. It branded itself as a citizens' movement focused on amplifying public concerns over the high cost of living, governance, corruption and youth unemployment.

Linda Mwananchi, which translates to "Protect the Citizen", sought to position itself as an alternative voice outside traditional party structures, attracting support from young Kenyans who felt alienated by mainstream politics.

Its rallies and public engagements drew large crowds across several counties, with leaders promising to champion the interests of ordinary Kenyans and push for reforms in government.

However, differences have recently emerged within the group over its political direction and relationships with other opposition formations.

Mr Amisi said the movement had begun conforming to the political establishment it was initially created to challenge.

He revealed that a team of strategists was already developing the agenda for his proposed outfit, which he described as a people's renaissance movement rather than a political party.

“The purpose of this movement is to ensure a new crop of leaders is elected into Parliament. We want leaders who can stand firm and hold the government accountable whenever it goes wrong,” he said.

The MP argued that while many opposition figures are focused on defeating President William Ruto at the ballot in 2027, the more critical task is ensuring the election of independent-minded legislators capable of checking executive excesses.

He maintained that a strong Parliament would be better placed to protect constitutionalism and public interests regardless of who occupies State House.

Mr Amisi also claimed he played a significant role in the formation of Linda Mwananchi and was instrumental in identifying Senator Sifuna as its leader.

His latest remarks come amid growing speculation about the future of the movement and whether it will remain united as opposition leaders begin positioning themselves for the 2027 General Election.

Analysts believe should Mr Amisi proceed with his plans, the move could further reshape Kenya's opposition landscape and deepen divisions within a movement that was initially conceived as a unified platform for reform-minded leaders and young voters.
