President William Ruto has congratulated Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi after he became the longest-serving elected prime minister in India's history, describing the achievement as a reflection of the confidence and trust reposed in him by the Indian people.

In a message released on Wednesday, President Ruto praised Mr Modi's political journey and leadership, saying his continued tenure in office demonstrated the faith that voters in the world's largest democracy have placed in him across three successive mandates.

"Congratulations to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on attaining a historic milestone in public service, as today you become the longest-serving elected Prime Minister in India's history," President Ruto said.

The President noted that the achievement was not only a personal milestone for Mr Modi but also a testament to the support he has continued to receive from Indian citizens.

"This reflects the trust and confidence reposed in your leadership by the people of India across three consecutive mandates in the world's largest democracy," he said.

President Ruto further lauded Mr Modi's rise from humble beginnings to one of the world's most influential political offices, describing it as an inspiration to many.

"Your journey from humble beginnings to this position is a testament to dedication, perseverance and public service," he said.

The Kenyan Head of State also highlighted the close ties between Nairobi and New Delhi, expressing optimism that the two nations would continue expanding cooperation in areas of mutual interest.

"Kenya values its strong and enduring partnership with India and looks forward to deepening cooperation for the mutual benefit of our peoples," President Ruto said.

He added: "India remains an important partner in our development journey, and we are committed to strengthening our collaboration in trade, technology, healthcare, agriculture, education and investment."

President Ruto concluded his message by wishing the Indian leader continued success in office.

"Best wishes for continued success and service to the people of India," he said.

Mr Modi's milestone comes more than a decade after he first took office in 2014. During that period, India has undergone significant economic, technological and infrastructure transformation, with supporters crediting his administration for expanding digital services, improving connectivity and elevating the country's global standing.

At the same time, critics have pointed to challenges including unemployment, inflation and concerns over democratic freedoms. Despite the differing views, Mr Modi remains one of the most influential and recognisable political figures in contemporary India.

Kenya and India have maintained warm diplomatic relations for decades, with cooperation spanning trade, education, healthcare, manufacturing and infrastructure development. India is among Kenya's key trading partners and investors, while thousands of Kenyans have benefited from educational and technical exchange programmes between the two countries.
