A political disagreement has erupted over the rising influence of Linda Mwananchi, with Siaya Governor James Orengo backing it as a people-centred movement, while Saboti Member of Parliament Caleb Amisi questions its direction and credibility.

The row reflects a widening split inside ODM, now shaped by competing factions following the post–Raila Odinga succession realignments and the emergence of rival political blocs within the party.

Orengo has strongly defended the movement, describing it as a citizen-driven platform rooted in solidarity, unity, and protection of ordinary Kenyans at a time of economic strain and political tension.

In a public message shared on Sunday, he said the movement remains focused on defending citizens’ interests and strengthening national cohesion.

“Linda Mwananchi is a powerful movement dedicated to standing by our brothers and sisters,” Orengo said, adding, “As we look ahead to the coming days, we continue our commitment to fighting for all Kenyans.”

He added that the movement’s strength lies in public support and collective resolve. “This Sunday, we pray for the grace and wisdom to keep moving forward,” he said.
“Your continued prayers and support are what keep us strong!”

From the ODM split to rival camps

Linda Mwananchi emerged from internal ODM-linked mobilisation networks that fractured after the party’s post–Raila Odinga transition. What began as youth and grassroots coordination forums gradually split into two rival blocs.

One faction adopted the “Linda Mwananchi” banner, positioning itself as a pro-people, reform-driven wing pushing a tougher stance against the Kenya Kwanza administration. The rival camp, associated with the “Linda Nchi” slogan, has been linked to leaders perceived as open to engagement with President William Ruto’s political camp and messaging that has included a “one-term” narrative around the presidency.

The split has since spilt beyond party structures into rallies, online spaces, and grassroots networks, turning ODM’s internal balancing act into a public political contest over ideology, direction, and future leadership.

Amisi fires a warning shot

Amisi has taken a sharply different view, warning that the movement is losing its original purpose.

He says emerging civic-political platforms often collapse into confusion once they gain traction, urging clarity, discipline, and accountability.“Linda Mwananchi has lost direction,” Amisi said, adding that it must clearly define its purpose or risk being absorbed into broader political competition.

His remarks have fueled debate within opposition circles, with supporters seeing him as defending ideological clarity, while critics view the comments as evidence of deeper internal friction within ODM’s post-transition power structure.

A movement under pressure

The rapid rise of Linda Mwananchi has now placed it at the centre of a widening political contest — with Orengo championing it as a grassroots awakening and Amisi warning it is drifting into political ambiguity.

Analysts say the movement reflects a broader realignment in opposition politics, where competing factions are now fighting to define the post–Raila Odinga era narrative, control grassroots networks, and shape the next phase of political mobilisation.

For now, Linda Mwananchi remains both a rallying cry and a political fault line — embraced by some as a voice of the people, and dismissed by others as a movement still searching for its identity.
