Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on Thursday held a breakfast meeting in Nairobi with Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya, where the two discussed opposition political strategy and a planned tour of Western Kenya.
Gachagua said the meeting, which he described as “fruitful and engaging,” focused on preparations for a forthcoming Western Kenya tour by the United Alternative Government starting Friday, June 12, 2026.
He said the tour will be used to mobilise support and engage residents on what he termed the need for “national change,” accusing the current administration of mismanagement and corruption. The claims were directed at President William Ruto’s government.
The former Deputy President further stated that the Western Kenya leadership was increasingly aligned with the opposition’s push for a united front ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
According to Gachagua, discussions also centred on the need for the opposition to rally behind a single presidential candidate to face President Ruto in the August 10, 2027 election. He said similar consultations were ongoing within his political formation, the Democratic Congress Party (DCP), described as part of the United Alternative Government coalition.
He also revealed that he had briefed Governor Natembeya on what he termed a 45-day stakeholder engagement exercise at his Wamunyoro residence aimed at building consensus within his support base on the issue of a joint presidential flagbearer.
Governor Natembeya, he added, had indicated that parallel discussions on political unity and consolidation were also ongoing in Western Kenya and across the country.
The meeting comes as opposition figures intensify early groundwork for alliances ahead of the next general election, with calls for coalition-building and unified candidature becoming a central theme in their engagements.
