Former Cabinet Minister and longtime Kilgoris Member of Parliament Gideon Sitelu Konchellah has died at the age of 75, bringing to an end a distinguished career in military service and politics that spanned more than five decades.
Konchellah passed away on Saturday while receiving treatment at a Nairobi hospital after a prolonged illness, family members confirmed. His death prompted an outpouring of tributes from leaders across the country, led by President William Ruto, who hailed him as a devoted public servant and a leader who earned the trust of his constituents.
"It is with profound sorrow that I have learnt of the passing of Hon. Gideon Konchellah, former Member of Parliament for Kilgoris and a distinguished Cabinet Minister," President Ruto said in a statement.
A retired military officer, Konchellah entered elective politics in 2002 when he was elected MP for Kilgoris Constituency. He would go on to represent the constituency for nearly two decades, becoming one of the most influential political figures in Narok County and the wider South Rift region.
During his years in Parliament, Konchellah served as Minister for Immigration and Registration of Persons under former President Mwai Kibaki, overseeing key reforms in the immigration sector and helping implement the Refugee Act of 2006.
Reflecting on Konchellah's legacy, President Ruto noted that the former legislator's impact extended far beyond the offices he held.
"For nearly two decades, Hon. Konchellah gave himself to the people of Kilgoris; and through them, to our nation. He represented with dignity. He understood that public office is, above all, a public trust," Ruto said.
"His was a life measured not in the years he held office, but in the lives he touched and the faith his people placed in him."
Before joining politics, Konchellah served in the Kenya military for more than 30 years, rising through the ranks and earning respect for his leadership and commitment to duty.
His death marks the loss of one of the Maasai community's most prominent political leaders, with many residents crediting him for championing development projects and representing the interests of the people of Kilgoris throughout his lengthy tenure in Parliament.
President Ruto described the death as a significant loss to both the constituency and the nation.
"Today, Kenya is the poorer for his loss. Kilgoris mourns a devoted son and a steadfast champion. The nation mourns a leader of his generation," he said.
The President also extended condolences to the family and residents of Kilgoris, saying: "May you find comfort in the enduring legacy of his service, and in the knowledge that a grateful nation grieves alongside you."
Konchellah remained active in public life even after leaving Parliament and unsuccessfully contesting the Narok Senate seat in the 2022 General Election.
Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in the coming days.
He leaves behind a legacy of military discipline, public service, and political leadership that shaped Kilgoris and contributed to Kenya's national development for more than two decades.
