Linda Nchi turns to Gusii as campaign against Ruto gathers pace

"Sifuna, Orengo and allies head to Kisii and Nyamira seeking to expand an anti-government movement as Ruto's camp points to development projects in the vote-rich Gusii region."

The Linda Mwananchi movement will this week take its anti-government campaign to Kisii and Nyamira counties, opening a new political front in the Gusii region as opposition leaders intensify efforts to build momentum against President William Ruto’s administration ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The movement, which emerged from a faction within ODM critical of the party’s broad-based cooperation with Kenya Kwanza, has in recent months positioned itself as a vocal opposition platform led by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, Siaya Governor James Orengo, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi, Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka and Rarieda MP Otiende Amollo.

Its rise has been shaped by a series of rallies across the country, beginning in Nairobi and spreading to parts of Nyanza, Western Kenya and Central Kenya. Recent stops include Machakos, Kiambu and Thika, where the movement drew significant crowds and sharpened its attacks on government policy.

At the Thika rally, one of the most attended so far, opposition leaders accused the Kenya Kwanza administration of imposing heavy taxation and failing to address the rising cost of living. Mr Sifuna said the movement would continue engaging citizens across the country, insisting that opposition voices must remain active.

“We are moving across the country to speak to Kenyans directly about what is happening in their lives. The burden of taxes and the cost of living cannot be ignored,” he said.

Governor Orengo, who has repeatedly framed the movement as a constitutional check on the Executive, said the opposition had a duty to remain firm even under political pressure.

“The opposition must never be silent. Our role is to defend democracy and ensure accountability in government,” he said at a previous rally.

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has consistently focused his message on youth unemployment and economic hardship, warning that frustration among young people was rising.

“Young people are struggling. They need jobs, opportunities and a government that listens to them,” he said during earlier engagements.

The Gusii tour is expected to be politically significant given the region’s shifting loyalties and its growing importance in national politics. President Ruto has made repeated visits to Kisii and Nyamira since taking office in 2022, undertaking at least three major development tours in which he has launched and inspected road, housing, water, market and health projects.

In his most recent visit, the President defended his development record and dismissed critics of his administration, urging leaders to focus on service delivery rather than politics.

“I want to tell those who are busy with politics that Kenya will not be built through endless campaigns. Our focus is on development and improving the lives of ordinary citizens,” he said.

His allies have echoed similar sentiments, arguing that the government’s infrastructure investments in the Gusii region demonstrate a commitment to long-standing development needs.

But the opposition insists that economic pressure on households remains the central issue. Linda Mwananchi leaders say the Kisii and Nyamira rallies will focus on taxation, unemployment, public debt and what they describe as weakening democratic space.

Mr Sifuna, in a recent statement ahead of the Gusii tour, said: “On the 26th, we are in Kisii and Nyamira. Tuko pale Kisii/Nyamira.”

The brief message has since been widely circulated among supporters as confirmation of the movement’s next political stop.

As both sides step up their campaigns, Gusii has emerged as one of the country’s key political battlegrounds. For the opposition, it offers an opportunity to expand influence beyond traditional strongholds. For the government, it is a region where development projects are being used to consolidate political support.

With the 2027 elections drawing closer, the Kisii and Nyamira rallies are expected to provide an early measure of whether Linda Mwananchi can convert its growing visibility into sustained political support in a region central to Kenya’s electoral arithmetic.
