Jimi Wanjigi has launched a scathing attack on President William Ruto’s administration, accusing it of violating constitutional rights and failing to protect citizens during public demonstrations.
In a strongly worded statement shared on his X account on Thursday, June 25, 2026, Wanjigi criticised the government's response to protests as Kenyans commemorated the second anniversary of the June 25, 2024 Gen Z demonstrations.
“President Ruto, you swore an oath to protect the Constitution, not to pour blood all over it!” Wanjigi said.
The opposition leader's remarks came as the country reflected on one of the most defining political moments in recent Kenyan history, when thousands of young protesters took to the streets to oppose the Finance Bill 2024.
The demonstrations culminated in the storming of Parliament on June 25, 2024, sparking a nationwide debate on governance, taxation, accountability, and the right to peaceful protest.
Wanjigi accused the government of failing to uphold constitutional freedoms, arguing that citizens should be allowed to express their views without fear of intimidation, violence, or repression.
He also raised concerns over police conduct during demonstrations, warning against what he described as the excessive use of force against unarmed protesters.
According to Wanjigi, the government's handling of public dissent risks undermining democratic principles and eroding public trust in state institutions.
The Safina Party leader further expressed concern about media freedom, maintaining that journalists and media houses should be allowed to operate independently and report on national events without interference.
His comments add to growing criticism from opposition leaders and civil society groups who have used the June 25 anniversary to renew calls for justice and accountability for victims of the 2024 protests.
