Kakamega County Deputy Governor Ayub Savula has raised concerns over reports that a section of national government officials is planning to travel to the United States to attend the FIFA World Cup final, questioning the value of the trip to taxpayers.
Speaking during an interview with a local radio station on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, Savula argued that public resources should be directed towards addressing the needs of citizens rather than financing foreign travel that does not contribute to national development.
The deputy governor said he had received information indicating that several government officials were preparing for the trip, warning that such expenditure would be difficult to justify at a time when many Kenyans are grappling with economic challenges.
“I’m being told that there are national government officials who are planning to make a trip to America for the World Cup finals,” Savula said.
He questioned the rationale behind using public funds for the proposed visit, insisting that government spending should be guided by the interests of ordinary citizens.
“That is a waste of public funds and it raises the question: what value does it add to the common mwananchi?” Savula posed.
The deputy governor maintained that the government should prioritize prudent use of taxpayers' money by investing in essential public services and development projects that directly improve the lives of Kenyans.
His remarks come amid continued public scrutiny over government expenditure, particularly on foreign travel and other non-essential expenses, as calls for fiscal discipline continue to dominate the national conversation.
The national government has not publicly commented on the claims regarding the reported trip.
