Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on Wednesday held talks with businessman and political activist Jimmy Wanjigi at his Wamunyoro residence, in what appears to be the latest effort to consolidate opposition forces ahead of the 2027 General Election.
In a statement shared after the meeting, Mr Gachagua said the discussions centred on what he termed the country's "liberation cause" and consultations on the formation of the "6th Administration."
"I have greatly benefited from his insights and experience in formation of Governments. Consultations continue," Mr Gachagua said after hosting the businessman.
The meeting comes amid heightened political activity among opposition figures seeking to build a broad-based alliance to challenge President William Ruto's administration in the next elections.
Mr Wanjigi, a businessman with a long history in Kenya's political landscape, has previously played influential roles in opposition politics and has been involved in coalition-building efforts across different electoral cycles. He contested the presidency in the 2022 election under the Safina Party ticket before withdrawing from active campaigning.
Mr Gachagua has in recent months emerged as one of President Ruto's fiercest critics following his fallout with the Kenya Kwanza administration. Since leaving office, the former deputy president has embarked on a series of consultations with political leaders, professionals, clergy and business figures, saying the engagements are aimed at crafting an alternative vision for the country.
Political observers view the meeting with Mr Wanjigi as significant, given the businessman's experience in political strategy and coalition formation. It also signals attempts by opposition figures to draw expertise from across the political divide as discussions over a possible anti-Ruto coalition gather momentum.
While neither Mr Gachagua nor Mr Wanjigi disclosed the specifics of their discussions, the former deputy president insisted that gathering diverse views was essential in shaping the country's political future.
"The liberation cause of our country and the formation of the 6th Administration is so critical that we must get views from all," Mr Gachagua said.
The consultations at Wamunyoro are expected to continue in the coming months as opposition leaders seek to forge alliances and define a common political agenda ahead of the 2027 race.
