A wave of public frustration is building around President William Ruto’s governing style, after outspoken blogger Cyprian Nyakundi accused him of “knowing everything, advising on everything, commenting on everything… everything except how to actually govern,” a critique that has echoed widely across Kenyan social platforms.

Nyakundi’s post, shared many times, landed at a moment when many Kenyans say they see a presidency heavy on talk and light on delivery. With living costs rising, taxes biting and key reforms stalling, the critique tapped into a growing narrative — that the administration has mastered speeches but lost control of the country’s day-to-day realities.

Across Kenyan web forums, similar language has hardened into a kind of public chorus. On one thread, a user wrote that Ruto “surrounds himself with mediocrity, then gives us lectures instead of results,” listing Cabinet appointments such as Aisha Jumwa and Mithika Linturi as evidence of what they called “the government’s crisis of competence.” Another commenter said the president “ran one of the most efficient campaigns in our history, but somehow cannot run the country with the same clarity or discipline.”

On Reddit, a Nairobi user wrote: “The man talks too much. Every day it’s a new speech, a new announcement. Meanwhile unga is up, taxes are up, fuel is up. He’s governing on microphones, not on policy.”

Governance analysts say those sentiments reflect a deeper erosion of public confidence. They argue that Ruto’s highly visible, hyper-involved leadership style — once marketed as hands-on — is now seen by critics as micromanagement without strategy. Frequent statements, late-night economic updates and constant policy declarations have not translated into measurable improvements for ordinary Kenyans.

State House has previously dismissed such criticism as politically driven, insisting the president is tackling long-standing structural problems and should be judged over a longer arc. But with his administration past the halfway mark, public patience is thinning. Even supporters in Mt Kenya and Rift Valley, once his strongest base, have begun asking why the president appears more focused on public explanations than public outcomes.

Nyakundi’s attack, though familiar in tone, carried a sharper sting this time — not because of its language, but because so many Kenyans read it and nodded.
