Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has signaled intensified political consultations ahead of the 2027 General Election after meeting leaders of Kiama Kia Kiama, the council of elders that guides the Kikuyu community on political, economic, and social matters.
In a statement shared on social media on Thursday, Gachagua described elders as "repositories of wisdom and foresight" whose counsel plays a critical role in shaping decisions that affect both the community and the country.
The former deputy president said the elders had offered guidance on "the way forward in our journey to liberate our country, including the formation of the 6th administration," remarks that are likely to fuel speculation about ongoing efforts to build a broad-based opposition coalition to challenge President William Ruto in the 2027 elections.
Gachagua also indicated that the consultations extend beyond community interests, saying the elders had stressed the need to work collaboratively with fellow Kenyans for the greater good of the country.
The meeting comes as Gachagua has stepped up engagements with political leaders and community groups across the country, positioning himself as a key player in the emerging opposition realignments.
By invoking the idea of a "6th administration" and emphasizing continued consultations, Gachagua appeared to suggest that political negotiations and alliance-building efforts remain underway as the race to succeed the current administration gradually takes shape.
"Consultations continue," Gachagua said, ending his statement with a call for national unity and blessings for the country.
A strong news angle here is that Gachagua is using traditional community structures to lay the groundwork for coalition-building and the formation of an alternative government ahead of the 2027 elections.
