The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) will on Thursday open a new chapter in Kenya’s electoral reform debate when it launches a report detailing how it handled pre-election disputes during the 2022 General Election.
The report, to be unveiled alongside a case digest of the 2022 General Election disputes, is expected to provide a record of complaints raised by political parties, candidates and other stakeholders before the polls, the decisions made by the electoral agency, and lessons drawn from the process.
The launch comes as the country begins preparations for the 2027 General Election, with questions over electoral credibility, fairness and the management of political competition expected to dominate public debate in the coming months.
IEBC said the event will be held under the theme “Path to the Polls: Electoral Integrity Through Justice and Dispute Resolution”, highlighting the importance of resolving electoral disagreements through established legal and administrative channels.
Pre-election dispute resolution has become a critical part of Kenya’s electoral system, providing a platform for candidates and parties to challenge issues arising before voting day, including nomination disputes, eligibility questions and other disagreements linked to the electoral process.
The 2022 General Election was preceded by a series of disputes, particularly during party nominations, where aspirants contested decisions by political parties over the allocation of tickets and the conduct of nomination exercises.
Some disputes also reached the courts, reinforcing the role of judicial oversight in ensuring that electoral processes comply with constitutional and legal requirements.
The IEBC report is expected to offer stakeholders an opportunity to assess whether existing mechanisms were effective in addressing complaints before they affected the credibility of the election.
The release also comes at a time when political parties are positioning themselves for the next election cycle, with alliances, candidate selection and voter mobilisation expected to intensify.
Electoral justice experts have consistently argued that early and transparent handling of disputes is essential in preventing conflicts after elections, especially in a country where contested electoral outcomes have previously triggered political tensions.
By documenting the experiences of the 2022 election cycle, IEBC hopes to provide a roadmap for improving future electoral processes and strengthening confidence among voters, political parties and other stakeholders.
The commission’s Thursday event will bring together electoral stakeholders as Kenya begins another journey towards the next General Election.
