Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has intensified his criticism of President William Ruto and Johnson Sakaja, accusing the two leaders of presiding over the decline of the capital and allowing insecurity, corruption and poor service delivery to flourish.

In a statement on Tuesday following a meeting with a delegation of opinion leaders from Westlands Constituency led by senior lawyer Nelson Havi, Mr Gachagua painted a grim picture of Nairobi, saying the city had lost its status as the "Green City in the Sun."

"The City of Nairobi is in ruins. Total failure. It is no longer the Green City in the Sun," Mr Gachagua said.

He accused the national and county governments of failing to guarantee security, alleging that criminal gangs were operating with impunity and frightening residents, tourists and investors.

The former deputy president further claimed that forced demolitions and evictions had left families homeless, while congestion in public schools, poor drainage and widespread corruption at City Hall had worsened living conditions for Nairobi residents.

He also singled out the county's planning department, alleging that corruption had become entrenched in the approval of developments.

Mr Gachagua said the concerns were raised during consultations with a delegation from Westlands, which he said presented proposals on what they described as the "liberation" of Nairobi and the country ahead of the formation of what he referred to as the "sixth administration."

"I am disturbed by the graphic details presented to me on the rot in our capital city, Nairobi. Consultations continue," he said.

The remarks are the latest in Mr Gachagua's sustained criticism of President Ruto's administration since the two leaders fell out politically after his impeachment from office last year.

His latest attack comes as political activity continues to gather momentum ahead of the 2027 General Election, with opposition figures stepping up engagements across the country while highlighting governance, the cost of living and service delivery as key campaign issues.

Neither State House nor Governor Sakaja had responded to Mr Gachagua's allegations by the time of publication.
