Leaders gathered at Nairobi Baptist Church on Tuesday to honour the late Joseph Munyao, a veteran politician remembered for his unwavering loyalty to former President Mwai Kibaki and his role in shaping Kenya’s multi-party democracy.
Speaking during the memorial service, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua said the country owed Munyao deep gratitude for “standing steadfastly with the late President Mwai Kibaki through every challenge,” describing him as a dependable ally who helped steady the administration during turbulent moments. “The late Hon. Joseph Munyao served his country with dedication, giving his all as a distinguished public servant,” Gachagua said.
He joined Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Democratic Party leader Justin Muturi, DAP-K boss Eugene Wamalwa and Narc-Kenya leader Martha Karua at the service, where speakers reflected on Munyao’s decades-long political journey and his influence on national stability.
Leaders recalled Munyao as a key pillar in the formation and strengthening of the Democratic Party, which rose to prominence in the 1990s and later became the vehicle that carried Kibaki to State House. “He was a true friend of President Kibaki and will be remembered for his significant contributions to the DP, which has endured for many years,” Gachagua said.
Speakers noted that Munyao’s legacy underscored the importance of strong, principled political parties in safeguarding the country’s democratic aspirations, especially at a time when the political landscape is increasingly fluid.
Religious leaders urged the political class to emulate Munyao’s commitment to service, humility and party loyalty, qualities they said were increasingly rare in today’s politics.
Munyao, who served in various public roles over his long career, was praised as a mentor to emerging leaders and a steady influence in coalition-building during periods of political transition.
“May Almighty God grant eternal peace to the soul of Hon. Joseph Munyao,” Gachagua said as the service drew to a close, attended by family members, long-time political allies and supporters.
