Democratic Congress Party (DCP) Deputy Party Leader Cleophas Malalah has described the party's victory in the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election as evidence that the ballot remains the most powerful tool for removing governments, saying the outcome reflects growing public confidence in the opposition ahead of the 2027 General Election.
In a statement following the declaration of the results, Malalah congratulated DCP candidate Sammy Douglas Waweru wa Kamau on his election to the National Assembly, while portraying the by-election as a referendum on the Kenya Kwanza administration.
"The Ol Kalou by-election and the convincing victory of the DCP candidate is yet another reassurance that a cruel and dictatorial regime can be removed through the ballot," Malalah said.
The former Kakamega Senator argued that the outcome demonstrated the importance of safeguarding electoral integrity, saying voters had shown that democracy flourishes when elections are conducted without interference.
"The people of Ol Kalou have demonstrated that when votes are protected, bribery, coercion and intimidation put in check, democracy often prevails," he said.
Malalah also congratulated the newly elected legislator, urging him to focus on serving the people of Ol Kalou.
"Congratulations are in order to our National Assembly first born, MP-elect Sammy Douglas Waweru wa Kamau. Serve Ol Kalou diligently. Onto the next!!"
The DCP's victory has energized opposition leaders, who have interpreted the result as an early indication of shifting political fortunes ahead of the 2027 General Election. Several opposition figures have argued that the by-election demonstrates growing voter dissatisfaction with the Kenya Kwanza administration and validates their calls for a united political front.
The by-election was closely watched by political players across the country, with both the government and opposition viewing the contest as a test of their grassroots support.
For DCP, the victory delivers the party's first parliamentary seat since its formation, strengthening its claim as an emerging political force within the opposition.
Political analysts, however, caution against reading too much into a single by-election, noting that local dynamics, candidate popularity and constituency-specific issues often shape electoral outcomes differently from national contests.
Even so, the Ol Kalou result is expected to embolden opposition leaders, who have increasingly framed recent by-elections as a measure of public sentiment towards President William Ruto's administration.
With more electoral contests expected before 2027, both Kenya Kwanza and the opposition are likely to use the Ol Kalou outcome to sharpen their political messaging, setting the stage for an increasingly competitive race toward the next General Election.
