The victory of Democratic Congress Party (DCP) candidate Sammy Douglas Waweru wa Kamau in the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election has injected fresh momentum into former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s political camp, while dealing President William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza administration a significant setback in the battle for influence ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The contest, triggered by the death of former Ol Kalou MP David Kiaraho, had attracted national attention after it turned into a political duel between President Ruto’s allies and the emerging DCP movement associated with Mr Gachagua.

Mr Waweru, who was backed by DCP, defeated the Kenya Kwanza candidate in a race that was closely watched as an early measure of the political mood in the country.

For Mr Gachagua’s allies, the victory was presented as evidence that voters are increasingly willing to challenge the ruling establishment through the ballot. For President Ruto’s supporters, the outcome served as a reminder that government influence and development pledges alone may not guarantee electoral victories.

The campaign period was marked by heightened political activity, with both sides deploying senior leaders to rally support for their candidates.

The Kenya Kwanza team campaigned on President Ruto’s development agenda, highlighting government projects and interventions aimed at improving livelihoods, including infrastructure programmes, agricultural reforms and other initiatives they said demonstrated the administration’s commitment to the people of Ol Kalou.

However, the opposition accused the government of using state resources and institutions to influence the outcome of the contest.

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna hailed Ol Kalou voters for what he described as courage in the face of pressure, accusing the government of deploying intimidation and state power during the campaigns.

“Hats off to the people of Ol Kalou. Everything was thrown at you; bribery, violence, intimidation, state power, but you stood firm. Congratulations to Sammy Kamau and the entire DCP team for that resounding victory,” Mr Sifuna said.

His remarks captured the opposition’s narrative that the by-election was not just about replacing an MP, but a test of whether citizens could resist political pressure and make independent choices.

DCP Deputy Party Leader Cleophas Malalah also celebrated the result, describing it as a demonstration that democratic change remains possible through elections. The Ol Kalou by-election and the convincing victory of the DCP candidate is yet another reassurance that a cruel and dictatorial regime can be removed through the ballot,” Mr Malalah said.

He added “The people of Ol Kalou have demonstrated that when votes are protected, bribery, coercion and intimidation put in check, democracy often prevails.”

Mr Malalah congratulated Mr Waweru, urging him to focus on serving the people of Ol Kalou.

“Congratulations are in order to our National Assembly first born, MP-elect, Sammy Douglas Waweru wa Kamau. Serve Ol Kalou diligently. Onto the next!”

The by-election also exposed the widening political rivalry between President Ruto and his former deputy, who has been building a new political base after his fallout with the Head of State.

The DCP victory gives Mr Gachagua’s allies a much-needed boost as they seek to position the party as a credible alternative ahead of 2027. It also strengthens their argument that the political ground is shifting against the Kenya Kwanza administration.

But analysts cautioned against reading too much into a single constituency contest, noting that by-elections are often shaped by local issues, candidate popularity and constituency-specific dynamics.

The result, however, provides both sides with important lessons. For DCP, it offers proof of electoral viability and momentum. For Kenya Kwanza, it highlights the need to address voter concerns and strengthen grassroots mobilisation.
