Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi has claimed his life is in danger, alleging that a bullet was fired near his home and struck his neighbour’s house in Kibiku, prompting fresh concerns over rising political tension in the county.
Speaking on Tuesday, Wamatangi said the incident occurred late in the night and has left his family shaken. “A bullet was fired and hit my neighbour’s house in Kibiku,” he said, describing the shooting as a deliberate attempt to intimidate him. He did not name any suspects but linked the episode to what he termed an escalation of threats against him in recent months.
The Governor said he has reported the matter to police and expects swift action, adding that the attack comes amid what he described as resistance to his reform agenda at the county. “I want investigators to tell Kenyans the truth. My life is in danger,” he said.
Police in Ngong confirmed they received a report of a shooting in the area and have launched investigations. Officers recovered a spent cartridge at the scene and have begun tracing the trajectory of the bullet to determine where it was fired from.
The incident adds to simmering political divisions in Kiambu, where Wamatangi has complained of sabotage from rivals ahead of the 2027 elections. Several county leaders have publicly criticised his administration, accusing him of isolating elected officials — claims he has dismissed as attempts to destabilise his leadership.
Residents who gathered outside the damaged house on Tuesday morning said they were startled by the loud sound of gunfire. No one was injured.
Wamatangi urged national security agencies to take the threats seriously. “I will not be cowed,” he said. “But I want Kenyans to know the kind of intimidation we are dealing with.”
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations is expected to review CCTV footage from neighbouring homes as part of the ongoing probe.
