President William Ruto has appointed former Bumula Member of Parliament Moses Wekesa Mwambu Mabonga as the new non-executive chairperson of the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA).

The appointment was published in a Kenya Gazette notice dated Friday, July 24, 2026, pursuant to Section 12(1)(a) of the Energy Act and Section 51(1) of the Interpretation and General Provisions Act.

According to the gazette notice signed by President Ruto, Mabonga will serve a three-year term with effect from July 24, 2026.

The appointment also revoked Gazette Notice No. 7850 of 2025.

“I, William Samoei Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces, appoint Moses Wekesa Mwambu Mabonga to be the Non-Executive Chairperson of the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority, for a period of three (3) years,” the gazette notice stated.

Following the appointment, Mabonga thanked President Ruto for the opportunity to serve, saying he was honoured by the confidence placed in him.

He pledged to discharge his responsibilities diligently and contribute to strengthening Kenya’s energy sector.

“To my family, friends, colleagues and everyone who has walked this journey with me, thank you for your encouragement, prayers and steadfast support. I remain committed to serving our country faithfully and to making a meaningful contribution to the realisation of Kenya’s development agenda. God bless Kenya,” Mabonga said.

The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority is responsible for regulating Kenya’s energy and petroleum sectors, including licensing, tariff regulation, consumer protection and ensuring compliance with industry standards.
