The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission has moved to address concerns among millions of Kenyans ahead of the 2027 General Election, assuring registered voters that they will not be required to undergo fresh registration.
In a public advisory, the electoral agency clarified that citizens who are already registered voters do not need to register again, urging them instead to verify their details to ensure their information is accurate ahead of the polls.
"I am a registered voter. Do I need to register again? No. If you are already registered as a voter, you do not need to register again. Verify your voter registration details," IEBC said.
The message comes as the commission steps up preparations for the next election cycle, with voter registration, verification and management of the electoral roll expected to remain key issues in the countdown to 2027.
The clarification is aimed at preventing confusion among voters who may have assumed that every election cycle requires a fresh registration exercise.
Maintaining an accurate voter register has remained one of the most critical tasks facing IEBC, especially after past elections were followed by disputes over the credibility of the electoral roll.
Political parties and stakeholders have consistently demanded a clean and verifiable register, arguing that confidence in elections begins with ensuring that only eligible voters appear on the roll.
IEBC has previously emphasised that voter verification allows citizens to confirm their registration details, including their polling stations and personal information, while giving the commission an opportunity to correct errors before election day.
The commission's latest message places emphasis on voter responsibility, encouraging Kenyans to confirm their details early rather than waiting until the election period.
The voter register has historically been at the centre of political debate in Kenya, with questions often raised over accuracy, missing names and multiple registrations.
Ahead of the 2022 General Election, IEBC conducted voter registration and verification exercises as part of efforts to expand participation and strengthen confidence in the electoral process.
The agency has maintained that a credible register is essential for free and fair elections and that continuous updating of voter information is necessary to reflect changes such as deaths, transfers and other demographic movements.
Preparing for 2027
With political activity already intensifying ahead of the 2027 elections, attention is increasingly shifting to the preparedness of electoral institutions.
The IEBC has been undertaking various processes aimed at strengthening election management, including stakeholder engagement, voter education and reviewing electoral systems.
The commission has also stressed the importance of early preparation to avoid last-minute challenges that have affected previous election cycles.
