A fresh political storm is unfolding in Nyamira after Members of the County Assembly protested the Senate’s decision to spare Governor Amos Nyaribo from impeachment, vowing to take the fight to court in a showdown that now threatens to spill into the judiciary.
The lawmakers, who had overwhelmingly voted to remove the governor over allegations of mismanagement and abuse of office, accused the Senate of “shielding impunity” and overturning the will of Nyamira residents. In a tense statement outside the county assembly buildings, several MCAs said they would not accept what they called a politically influenced verdict.
“We cannot sit back and watch the Senate invalidate the voice of our people,” one MCA said, insisting that the charges against the governor were supported by evidence the Senate panel “chose to ignore.” Another added: “We are moving to court. This decision cannot stand.”
The Senate had on Thursday dismissed the impeachment, citing insufficient grounds and procedural lapses in the assembly’s case — a ruling that immediately sparked anger among a section of Nyamira leaders who insisted they had followed the law.
The standoff now heightens uncertainty in a county long troubled by infighting and stalled development projects. It also sets up another confrontation between devolved units and the Senate, which has in recent years overturned a number of impeachment attempts, arguing assemblies have often rushed the process or failed to meet evidentiary thresholds.
Residents who had gathered outside the assembly to witness the MCAs’ reaction watched as tempers flared, some cheering the lawmakers while others called for calm.
