Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has held talks with British High Commissioner Matt Baugh in Nairobi, in an engagement that comes as the senator steps up his national political activities ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Sifuna said he met Baugh at the British envoy's residence on Sunday morning, describing the encounter as a “pleasure” but giving no details of what they discussed.

“Was a pleasure to have a chat with the British High Commissioner Matt Baugh at his residence in Nairobi this morning,” Sifuna said.

Neither Sifuna nor the British High Commission immediately gave details of the issues discussed.

The meeting comes at a time when Sifuna has become one of the opposition's most outspoken voices against President William Ruto's administration, while also taking an increasingly prominent role in grassroots mobilisation.

In recent weeks, he has taken the Linda Mwananchi campaign to different parts of the country, using the rallies to attack the government's record and outline what he says should be the opposition's alternative ahead of 2027.

Sifuna has repeatedly argued that the coming election should be about more than changing the occupants of State House.

Speaking recently about the opposition's plans, he said Kenyans were demanding a return to constitutional values and democratic governance.

“There is a life we used to live that was unacceptable to us, especially as measured against the six essential values highlighted in the preamble of the Constitution; human rights, democracy, rule of law, social justice, equity and equality,” Sifuna said.

“Our lives have to be lived within a context of democratic ideals.”

He has also framed the opposition's campaign as a struggle to restore democratic institutions.

Sifuna said the opposition would seek to restore what he called Kenya's “railway of democracy” if it wins power in 2027.

His criticism of the government has become increasingly direct.

In another recent attack on Ruto, Sifuna told the President: “William wacha uwongo, na watu wameshakugundua. Kama hiyo uwongo ndio unaita plan yako, sisi tunataka kukuambia plan yetu ni moja tu; uende nyumbani!”

He has also defended the opposition's use of political slogans such as “Ruto Must Go” and “Wantam”, arguing that Ruto himself rose to power on a powerful political narrative and slogan.

“You also rode on slogans to become President,” Sifuna said in remarks reported this week.

That distinction has become increasingly relevant as Sifuna continues to engage different political and civic actors while positioning himself as one of the figures shaping the opposition's message.

His meeting with Baugh therefore comes against a wider backdrop of political activity, although there is no indication that the discussion with the British diplomat was about the 2027 election or opposition politics.
