The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has called for stronger coordination among constitutional bodies, security agencies and other stakeholders as Kenya begins preparations for the 2027 General Election.
The commission made the call during a two-day National Stakeholders Convention on “Democratic, Credible and Peaceful 2027 Elections” at Ufungamano House in Nairobi.
The convention, convened by the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB), Evangelical Alliance of Kenya (EAK), Supreme Council of Kenya Muslims (SUPKEM) and National Council of Churches in Kenya (NCCK), is examining Kenya’s preparedness for the next election and identifying risks that could undermine a peaceful and credible process.
Representing IEBC Chairperson Erastus Ethekon, Commissioner Alutalala Mukhwana outlined the commission’s preparedness and urged stakeholders to hold IEBC accountable while supporting dialogue ahead of the election.
Mukhwana called on the religious community and other stakeholders to play their respective roles in safeguarding the electoral process and help in “charting the country’s peaceful path to 2027.”
The convention is also assessing the readiness of constitutional bodies with electoral and security mandates and developing measures to address potential threats before, during and after the election.
IEBC said the discussions are intended to produce concrete strategies, actions and commitments to protect the integrity of the 2027 electoral process.
The commission has previously said election security requires close cooperation with security agencies, which have the responsibility of maintaining a safe environment in which voters can participate without fear or intimidation.
The two-day meeting brings together actors from the democratic, electoral, religious and security sectors as preparations for the 2027 election gather pace.
