Sifuna brings Linda Mwananchi back home

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna is taking the Linda Mwananchi movement back to the capital on September 13, in what could become a major test of his growing political ambitions ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Sifuna announced the Nairobi leg of the movement’s nationwide tour on Wednesday, sharing a poster on X with the terse message: “Back to base.” The rally will be held on Sunday, September 13, five months after Linda Mwananchi last held a major gathering in Nairobi.

The return to Nairobi comes after months of grassroots mobilisation in different parts of the country, giving the event significance beyond an ordinary political rally.

For Sifuna, Nairobi is both a political stronghold and a testing ground. He is the county senator and has increasingly used Linda Mwananchi to build a political network beyond his traditional base as he weighs a possible run for the presidency in 2027.

The movement began its county tour in February, with Busia among its first stops, followed by Kajiado and Kakamega. It has since held engagements in counties including Narok, Mombasa, Nakuru, Vihiga, Kisumu, Machakos, Kisii, Taita Taveta, Trans Nzoia, Bungoma, Homa Bay and Meru.

The strategy is increasingly clear: build a national grassroots network first, then make a decision on whether to enter the presidential race.

Sifuna has repeatedly resisted declaring himself a candidate, insisting that the decision belongs to the movement and its supporters.

“We are very strongly considering the prospect of running a presidential candidate,” he said in July.

He added: “I don't make unilateral decisions. That decision has to be made together with the people so that it is a decision that is owned by everyone and not just Sifuna.”

The senator has said Linda Mwananchi wants to establish whether its support extends beyond the areas where its leaders already enjoy political influence before committing to a presidential campaign.

“We want to push our Linda Mwananchi movement until it becomes consequential such that when we say we will have a presidential candidate and a running mate, we indeed stand a chance of winning the election,” Sifuna said.

That calculation makes Nairobi particularly important.

The capital has a large and politically active electorate, with a history of shaping national political contests. A strong showing would give Sifuna fresh evidence that the enthusiasm witnessed during the county tours can be converted into a broader electoral base.

But the Nairobi rally will also come against the backdrop of an increasingly unsettled opposition landscape.

Sifuna has been openly critical of attempts to align his political camp with President William Ruto and has positioned Linda Mwananchi as part of the search for an alternative political direction.

The movement is also grappling with the question of the political vehicle it will use in 2027. Sifuna has indicated that he is prepared to back a new outfit if existing political structures prove unsuitable.

“My people allow me to look for another political vehicle and support it because that is the vehicle that will take us to the ballot,” he said during a Linda Mwananchi rally in Bungoma.

He has also sought to play down the importance of the movement’s eventual name, arguing that voters are more interested in the credibility of leaders than party branding.

“Haijalishi jina gani unaweka, wananchi are looking for credible leadership... A name is just a name,” he said.

Linda Mwananchi has meanwhile adopted a grassroots fundraising model, with the movement publicising Paybill number 3033049 on its rally posters and calling on ordinary Kenyans to support its activities.

Sifuna has portrayed the approach as an attempt to build a political movement from the bottom rather than depend on wealthy sponsors.

The September 13 rally will therefore offer Sifuna an opportunity to bring together the networks built during the nationwide tour and demonstrate the strength of his support in Nairobi.

However, organisers have yet to publicly release the specific venue, starting time or detailed itinerary for the event. The announcement currently confirms the date, Nairobi location and the movement’s fundraising details, with more logistical information expected from the organisers.

The event follows the movement’s recent tour of Meru, where Sifuna again confronted questions about his suitability for the presidency and promised not to make unrealistic promises to voters.

“As Sifuna, I will not lie to Kenyans to get elected President,” he said.
