Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and Siaya Governor James Orengo have met for lunch as fresh questions emerge over the unity of Kenya’s opposition and who will lead the anti-Ruto forces into the 2027 presidential election.

The meeting comes at a sensitive moment for the opposition, with Orengo declaring his presidential ambitions while Sifuna has emerged as a leading figure in the Linda Mwananchi movement. Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has also repeatedly said he intends to contest the presidency.

Sharing a picture of himself with Orengo, Sifuna appeared to play down speculation about differences between the two leaders.

“SC James Orengo amenunua lunch!” Sifuna said.

The brief post came amid media reports suggesting that Orengo’s decision to declare his presidential bid could set up a contest with Sifuna for the Linda Mwananchi ticket.

Orengo announced his presidential ambitions last week, saying: “From today, know that I’m the presidential candidate, a serious presidential candidate.”

His declaration has added another name to an already crowded opposition field that includes Gachagua, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka and other senior politicians involved in efforts to build a coalition capable of defeating President William Ruto.

Gachagua, who leads the Democracy for the Citizens Party, has said he will be on the ballot in 2027, although he has also backed consultations to identify a single opposition candidate.

“I wish to confirm to my supporters across the country that I'm eligible to vie as a presidential candidate, and I will be on the ballot on the 10th of August 2027 should the formula that will be agreed upon by the United Alternative Government favour me as a single presidential candidate,” Gachagua said in June.

In August, he went further, saying Kenyans who participated in his consultations wanted him to become the preferred presidential candidate of the opposition.

“Kenyans have told me that they have analysed and decided that Rigathi Gachagua needs to be the preferred presidential candidate of the United Democratic Government in the 2027 General Election,” he said.

At the same time, Gachagua has argued that the opposition should eventually settle on one candidate to face Ruto.

“I will be the unifying factor in identifying the single presidential candidate to face William Ruto,” he said.

The competing ambitions have provided ammunition to critics who have consistently argued that the opposition is divided and may struggle to agree on a single presidential candidate.

The divisions have centred on who should lead the coalition, how the candidate should be selected and when the decision should be made. Recent reports have pointed to growing disagreements among opposition principals over strategy and leadership.

President Ruto has also seized on the opposition's internal disagreements, while insisting that he remains willing to work with politicians across the political divide.

Asked about the opposition leaders mobilising against his administration, Ruto said he was open to working with political leaders across the divide but ruled out working with leaders who, in his view, promote “ethnic bigotry, divisive rhetoric or insults against other Kenyans.”

The President's remarks have provided his administration with an opportunity to portray the opposition as an unstable political bloc while positioning himself as willing to work with leaders outside his Kenya Kwanza camp.

For Linda Mwananchi, however, the Sifuna-Orengo meeting offers a different picture from the growing narrative of an imminent confrontation.

Sifuna has been at the centre of the movement's grassroots mobilisation, using rallies and public engagements to build support for the political outfit. His supporters have increasingly promoted him as a possible presidential candidate.

Orengo, meanwhile, brings decades of experience in national politics and has served as Siaya governor, Cabinet minister and a prominent opposition figure.

He has defended his decision to enter the presidential race, arguing that competing ambitions should not automatically be viewed as a threat to opposition unity.

“All the principals of the 2002 Pentagon that produced a single presidential candidate and ended Kanu’s 24-year reign were all presidential candidates,” Orengo said.

He added: “So, those who raise these fears are not democrats, and I can tell you if you don’t allow a process of internal democracy, then the case becomes very difficult to achieve unity.”

The remarks point to the central question now facing the opposition: whether its competing presidential ambitions can be managed through negotiations and a transparent selection process or whether they will develop into rival political camps.

The Sifuna-Orengo lunch therefore comes at a significant point in the opposition's preparations for 2027.

Rather than an open political confrontation, the picture shared by Sifuna showed the two leaders together, with the senator choosing to focus on the lighter side of the encounter.

But with Gachagua insisting on his presidential ambitions, Orengo entering the race and Sifuna's supporters pushing his candidature, the contest for the opposition's presidential ticket is becoming increasingly crowded.

The challenge for the opposition will now be to demonstrate that the competing ambitions can coexist long enough to produce a single candidate capable of taking on Ruto in 2027.
