The Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition has dropped its name and will now operate as the Ukombozi Alliance, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka announced on Monday.
Kalonzo said the decision was reached unanimously by the coalition’s leadership as opposition parties reorganise ahead of the 2027 General Election.
“Moving forward, this alliance shall no longer be called the Azimio La Umoja Coalition; we shall be called the Ukombozi Alliance,” Kalonzo said.
He said the new outfit would operate under the slogan “One Term, One Team, One Coalition”, signalling the coalition’s intention to bring opposition parties together under one political vehicle.
“Let the country know that we are on the move,” Kalonzo said.
The announcement was made at a press briefing attended by Siaya Governor James Orengo, DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa, former Attorney General Justin Muturi and other opposition leaders.
Kalonzo said the coalition would now embark on the next stage of its reorganisation, including consultations with other parties.
He said a meeting involving the Jubilee Party would be held on Tuesday to make what he described as “necessary and important decisions”, with the outcome to be communicated to the new alliance.
At Monday’s briefing, Kalonzo said former President Uhuru Kenyatta remained the coalition chairman and would convene the Jubilee meeting.
“The coalition chair is the 4th President, Uhuru Kenyatta, and tomorrow he is convening the Jubilee Party meeting to make necessary and important decisions and communicate to the Ukombozi Alliance so that we move together and in union,” he said.
However, Siaya Governor James Orengo had taken over as chairman of the Ukombozi Alliance Coalition Council after Monday’s meeting of the coalition’s top leadership.
The report said Uhuru had handed over the position to Orengo, although the earlier announcement by Kalonzo had placed the former President at the helm.
Orengo said the opposition now needed to move beyond consultations and begin building the coalition.
“The time is now and we must get into the business of building this coalition. It is not always easy but we are at it and at the end of the day, this new slogan, ‘One Term, One Team, One Coalition’, will be a reality,” he said.
The rebranding follows earlier plans by Azimio leaders to reorganise the coalition’s structures and widen its engagement with other opposition parties ahead of the 2027 election.
The new alliance will also use blue and white as its colours.
Kalonzo said the opposition would work to keep its leaders together and address differences emerging among opposition formations as they seek to build a broader political alliance.
The change gives the opposition coalition a new name as parties negotiate the shape of their alliances and leadership ahead of the 2027 elections.
