Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has accused the Kenya Kwanza administration of pursuing economic policies that favour the wealthy while placing a heavier burden on ordinary Kenyans and businesses.
Gachagua said the business community had been among those hardest hit by what he described as policies designed to benefit a few at the expense of the majority.
“These policies have been benefiting the big man while pushing Wanjiku further down the bottom of the economic ladder,” Gachagua said.
He made the remarks while addressing his supporters in Githurai 45, Ruiru, where he said residents were demanding accountability from leaders over promises made to them.
“The people of Githurai 45, Ruiru, Kiambu County, are asking: ‘Are you doing what we agreed? And what you are doing now, did we agree?’” he said.
Gachagua said his Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) would put listening to Kenyans at the centre of its political programme.
“Our commitment is clear: guided by our party slogan, Sikiza Wakenya, we will put listening first,” he said.
“Because leadership should begin by hearing the people and acting on their wishes.”
The former deputy president has in recent weeks made the cost of doing business and economic relief key themes in his opposition campaign.
During his ongoing engagements with Kenyans in the United States, Gachagua has also outlined proposals on taxation, corruption, healthcare, jobs and the business environment, presenting them as part of what he says would be an alternative programme if the opposition takes power in 2027.
His latest message comes as the DCP continues expanding its grassroots mobilisation, with party Secretary-General John Methu leading activities in different parts of the country.
Gachagua thanked residents of Githurai for their continued support and urged the DCP team led by Methu to continue with its mobilisation.
“Asanteni sana, Githurai, for your continued support,” he said.
“To our abled DCP Team led by Senator John Methu, keep pushing.”
