National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has raised alarm over the increasing number of road accidents across the country, warning that the trend poses a serious threat to public safety as the festive season takes shape.
In a statement issued after a deadly crash along the Kisumu–Chabera Road, Wetang’ula said he was deeply troubled by the rising road carnage that continues to claim innocent lives. The accident, which occurred late at night, claimed the lives of ten people, coming just hours after other crashes across the country had reportedly killed nearly twenty more.
“I join fellow Kenyans in expressing deep concern over the rising road carnage claiming innocent lives,” Wetang’ula said, adding that his thoughts and prayers are with the families affected by the tragedies.
With increased travel expected during the holiday period, the Speaker urged all road users to exercise heightened responsibility and caution. He called on drivers to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy, observe traffic rules, and avoid reckless behavior that could endanger lives.
Wetang’ula also appealed to passengers to play an active role in promoting road safety by speaking out against dangerous driving and reporting reckless conduct before it leads to tragedy.
“As we move through this busy holiday period, everyone has a role to play in saving lives on our roads,” he noted.
The Speaker concluded by offering condolences to the bereaved families and prayers for those who lost their lives, saying, “May the souls of the departed rest in eternal peace.”
