Political activist Morara Kebaso has accused Bungoma County leadership of presiding over the alleged misuse of billions of shillings allocated to the Misikhu–Naitiri–Brigadier Road project, warning that poor governance and bad voter decisions continue to entrench poverty.

In a statement, Kebaso revealed that the road project was allocated KSh1.2 billion in Phase One and KSh700 million in Phase Two. However, he claimed that despite these massive allocations, the work delivered on the ground does not reflect the amount of public money spent.

According to Kebaso, the contractor was paid KSh940 million under Phase One, yet only about two kilometres of road were completed. He further alleged that an additional KSh115 million was paid under Phase Two, but the section developed has already developed potholes just months after completion.

“The governor knows more because the money was paid in his office at the Bungoma County Government,” Kebaso claimed, suggesting that senior county officials were fully aware of how the funds were disbursed.

He argued that the state of the road project is a clear example of how corruption, poor oversight, and lack of accountability continue to undermine development at the county level. Kebaso warned that such failures not only waste public resources but also deny citizens essential infrastructure needed for economic growth.

Beyond the project itself, Kebaso delivered a sharp message to voters, urging them to reflect on their role in enabling poor leadership. He dismissed the notion that poverty is caused by misfortune or witchcraft, insisting instead that it is largely a consequence of repeated poor political choices.

“Poverty is not bad luck or witchcraft. It is a result of bad voters who endorse bad leadership because of clanism, tribalism, and cash handouts,” he said.

His remarks come amid growing public frustration over stalled or poorly executed infrastructure projects across the country, with increasing calls for transparency, accountability, and informed voting.

As the 2027 elections approach, Kebaso’s statements add to the wider national debate on governance, corruption, and the responsibility of citizens to elect leaders based on integrity and performance rather than ethnic loyalty or short-term inducements.
