Junet Mohamed has accused former President Uhuru Kenyatta and his close associates of mishandling funds meant to pay election agents during the 2022 General Election, escalating an internal row within the Orange Democratic Movement over responsibility for Raila Odinga’s defeat.
In a sharply worded press statement issued on Tuesday, the Suna East MP was responding to claims by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, the ODM Secretary General, who had challenged him to explain why party agents were allegedly unpaid or absent from polling stations during the last election.
“The answer is simple, clear and verifiable: former President Uhuru Kenyatta released the funds meant for election agents to his blood brother, Muhoho Kenyatta,” Junet said.
He alleged that Muhoho Kenyatta then appointed a man identified as Patrick Mburu to oversee the recruitment and payment of agents, claiming Mburu presented himself as an IT expert capable of detecting and preventing manipulation of results by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission.
“To date, Mr Mburu remains an aide of Uhuru Kenyatta. Just this past weekend, Mburu travelled to Nigeria in the company of Uhuru Kenyatta and Kalonzo Musyoka—clear evidence that he is not a peripheral figure in these matters,” Junet said.
According to the ODM legislator, the handling of agent logistics and payments was centralised in a highly restricted office in Westlands, from which Muhoho Kenyatta allegedly operated.
“Around the time, Muhoho Kenyatta operated from an office in Westlands that was so restricted that even Raila Odinga, the party’s presidential candidate, could not access it freely,” he said, adding that it was from this office that payments and logistics were purportedly managed.
“These are facts, not conjecture. I challenge Uhuru Kenyatta and Muhoho Kenyatta to publicly deny these facts,” Junet said.
He further claimed that once the Kenyatta camp took over the agents’ operations, no agents were procured for Odinga, either in the Mt Kenya region or in Luo Nyanza.
“The fact is once they took charge, they never procured any agents for Raila Odinga. It was a long con game,” he said.
Junet also rejected any suggestion that he betrayed Odinga during the election, saying his political standing within the party was proof of his loyalty.
“Raila Odinga would have had no reason whatsoever to appoint me as the Leader of Minority in the National Assembly if I had truly betrayed him,” he said. “For years, I handled all the delicate assignments from our late dear party leader with fidelity and diligence.”
He called on Uhuru Kenyatta, Muhoho Kenyatta, Patrick Mburu and Senator Sifuna to “come clean,” arguing that Kenyans deserved to know who controlled and mishandled the agents’ funds.
“Kenyans deserve the truth about the handling of agents’ money; who controlled it, who mishandled it, and then decide who cost us the election,” Junet said.
