The late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s spouse, Ida Odinga, has praised President William Ruto for his prompt and decisive intervention that led to the smooth repatriation of Raila Odinga’s body from India following his death in October 2025.
Raila Odinga passed away on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, while undergoing treatment in India. In the aftermath of his death, the Kenyan government, under President Ruto’s leadership, took charge of the entire state funeral process, ensuring that all arrangements were handled with dignity and efficiency. The official funeral ceremonies concluded on Sunday, October 19, 2025, at Raila’s rural home in Bondo, Siaya County.
While commemorating what would have been Raila Odinga’s 81st birthday on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, Mama Ida expressed heartfelt appreciation to President Ruto for the government’s role during a difficult moment for the family and the nation.
She noted that the swift coordination between Kenyan authorities and officials in India played a crucial role in ensuring that Raila’s body was repatriated without delay, allowing the family and the country to accord the former Prime Minister a befitting state farewell.
Mama Ida also extended her gratitude to Kenyans from all walks of life, political leaders, religious groups, and friends who stood with the Odinga family throughout the mourning period.
“I thank everyone who, in one way or another, made it possible for Raila to receive the dignified send-off that he deserved,” she said.
The late Raila Odinga, a towering figure in Kenya’s political history, was remembered during the birthday commemoration for his lifelong commitment to democracy, social justice, and public service. The event served both as a moment of reflection on his legacy and an expression of appreciation to those who supported the family during one of its most difficult chapters.
