Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro on Tuesday launched the 2026 edition of the Kiharu Masomo Bora programme, an education initiative that will see day secondary school students in the constituency pay Sh500 per term as part of efforts to ease the cost of schooling for parents.
The programme was launched at Maragi Primary School grounds, following similar launches at Gaturi grounds, Kahuhia Secondary School grounds and Kahuro Secondary School grounds, which attracted parents, learners, teachers and local leaders.
Under the initiative, learners enrolled in all 65 day secondary schools in Kiharu will benefit from the subsidised fees starting Term One, 2026. The programme will also provide lunch to students from Monday to Saturday, with chapati served on the last Friday of every month.
The initiative is expected to benefit more than 12,000 learners and is open to all students enrolled in day secondary schools within Kiharu, including those from outside the constituency who have accommodation arrangements.
Mr Nyoro said the programme was aimed at improving access to education and enhancing learning outcomes by reducing the financial burden on parents.
“We want to ensure that no child is locked out of school because of fees. When learners are supported, attendance improves and performance follows,” he said.
Beyond fee subsidies and meals, the programme will fund revision materials and infrastructure development, including the construction of laboratories in schools. These components will be financed through the Kiharu National Government Constituency Development Fund.
Local leaders and parents who attended the launch welcomed the initiative, saying it would cushion families against the rising cost of living and education-related expenses.
Several leaders attended the event, including Charles Machigo, Liz Mbugua, Esther Irungu and Wachiku, alongside representatives of Mama Sacco, parents and learners.
Mr Nyoro thanked stakeholders for supporting the programme, calling for accountability and community involvement to ensure its success.
The Kiharu Masomo Bora programme has become a flagship education intervention in the constituency, with previous editions credited by local education officials for improved enrolment and retention in day secondary schools.
