The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has released an official update on the ongoing investigation into the fatal road traffic accident that claimed the life of the late former Cabinet minister and businessman, Hon. Cyrus Jirongo.
According to the DCI, the accident occurred on the night of December 13, 2025, at the Karai area along the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway. The inquiry, first announced on January 5, 2026, is still ongoing and will be forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) once completed for appropriate legal action.
The agency stated that the investigation has been wide-ranging and comprehensive, addressing concerns raised in the public domain as well as through formal investigative channels. Detectives have analyzed information from multiple sources and recorded statements from individuals considered relevant to the case.
So far, statements have been taken from 28 people. These include seven passengers who were traveling in the bus involved in the accident and voluntarily came forward to assist investigators. The DCI also confirmed that National Assembly Speaker Rt. Hon. Moses Wetang’ula recorded his statement voluntarily during the early stages of the probe.
Other individuals who recorded statements include Ms. Eunice Chelagat, wife of Hon. George Khaniri, and Hon. George Khaniri himself, a close friend of the late Jirongo. The DCI noted that the Khaniris visited the accident scene on the day of the incident and assisted in facilitating the transfer of Jirongo’s body from Naivasha Sub-County Hospital Mortuary to Lee Funeral Home.
An autopsy conducted on the body established that Jirongo sustained severe injuries, including crush chest injuries, a broken sternum, and lacerations to the heart, liver, and kidneys. The pathologist concluded that the cause of death was multiple crush injuries resulting from blunt force trauma.
The DCI has urged media houses, members of the public, and political leaders to refrain from making speculative or unsubstantiated statements that could prejudice the investigation, cause unnecessary public anxiety, or unfairly damage the reputation of individuals who have cooperated with investigators.
The agency reaffirmed its commitment to conducting impartial, thorough, and expeditious investigations in strict accordance with the law as it works toward concluding the inquiry.
