President William Ruto has outlined a series of major development projects aimed at transforming Meru County into a modern urban and economic hub.
Speaking after presiding over the NYOTA Business Start-Up Capital disbursement at Kinoru Stadium, the President said the government is implementing a KSh3 billion Meru bypass project designed to decongest the town and accelerate its transition into a modern city. The bypass is expected to significantly ease traffic flow and improve the movement of goods and people.
In addition, President Ruto announced that construction of the Nithi Bridge will begin in February 2026. The KSh7 billion project will address persistent safety concerns along the Tharaka-Nithi–Meru border, an area that has recorded numerous fatal road accidents over the years.
The President also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening healthcare in the region by elevating Meru Teaching and Referral Hospital to a Level VI facility. He said the upgrade will enhance the hospital’s capacity to offer specialized, affordable, and accessible medical services not only to Meru residents but also to the wider region.
Addressing residents and traders of Makutano town, President Ruto emphasized that the projects are part of a broader plan to stimulate local economies, improve public safety, and deliver quality social services.
He noted that infrastructure, healthcare, and youth empowerment initiatives such as NYOTA are central to the government’s development agenda, aimed at ensuring inclusive growth and tangible improvements in the lives of Kenyans.
