Former Chief Justice David Maraga has issued a scathing condemnation of the government following the teargassing of worshippers at Witima Church in Nyeri County, describing the incident as a sign of a state that has lost moral authority and common decency.
Maraga warned that Kenyans must not remain bystanders as the country is pushed toward what he termed a failed state. He said a government that unleashes teargas on men, women, the elderly, and children inside a place of worship can no longer claim legitimacy or respect for human dignity.
According to the former CJ, such actions portray a regime that has descended into criminality and blatant abuse of power. He directly blamed President William Ruto’s administration for the incident, saying it reflects a dangerous breakdown in governance and respect for the rule of law.
Maraga demanded that President Ruto issue a public apology to all Kenyans, with specific acknowledgment of the worshippers affected at Witima Church. He further called for the immediate arraignment in court of the police officers responsible for the incident, insisting this be done within 24 hours.
He concluded by stressing that accountability and respect for citizens’ rights are non-negotiable pillars of democracy, warning that failure to act decisively would further erode public trust in the state.
