Former Attorney-General and Democratic Party (DP) leader Justin Muturi has raised concerns over what he described as increasing strain on Kenya’s constitutional order, calling on citizens to remain alert in defense of democracy and the rule of law.
Muturi made the remarks while addressing delegates during the Democratic Party of Kenya National Delegates Convention held at Ufungamano House on Wednesday, January 28, 2026. He described the gathering as a defining moment for the party, which he said has a long-standing history in Kenya’s democratic struggle.
“Today at Ufungamano House, the Democratic Party of Kenya held its National Delegates Convention, a defining moment for a party that has consistently stood on the frontlines of Kenya’s democratic journey,” Muturi said.
He traced the party’s origins to the fight against authoritarianism, noting that the DP was founded on the core principles of justice, accountability, and people-centred leadership.
Muturi emphasized that the party has remained committed to ensuring that political power serves the people rather than being used to dominate or suppress them. He warned that any erosion of constitutional safeguards poses a serious risk to democratic governance.
The DP leader pledged that the party will continue to play an active role in defending the Constitution, promoting the rule of law, and safeguarding democratic institutions.
His remarks come amid growing political debate over governance, constitutionalism, and the balance of power, as parties and leaders position themselves ahead of future political contests.
