Irungu Nyakera, the Nairobi Patron of the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), has publicly supported former Chief Justice David Maraga’s initiative to hold a fundraiser for his presidential campaign ahead of the 2027 General Elections. Nyakera emphasized that this move aligns with practices observed in advanced democracies, where citizens contribute directly to political campaigns.
“In advanced democracies, citizens fund the campaigns of those seeking elective office. However, in Kenya, candidates either finance themselves or are bankrolled by interested parties, brokers, political godfathers, and cartels,” Nyakera stated. “Once in office, these elected officials only answer to those financiers, making accountability impossible.”
Taking to his X (formerly Twitter) account on Friday, January 30, 2026, Nyakera, a former chairperson of the Kenya Medical Supplies Authority, noted that Maraga’s approach reflects a healthier democratic culture rooted in voter-funded campaigns. He criticized the Kenyan trend where candidates are predominantly financed by interested parties, with the expectation of favors or compensation once they assume office.
Nyakera’s endorsement signals a push towards reforming campaign financing practices in Kenya, advocating for increased citizen participation and transparency. His support for Maraga’s fundraising initiative underscores a broader call for Kenya to adopt more democratic and accountable electoral processes ahead of the 2027 elections.
