Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on Friday said history would judge leaders by whether they stood with Kenyans during what he described as a period of national distress marked by a struggling healthcare system, faltering education, rising insecurity, rampant corruption and abuse of the Constitution.
Mr Gachagua spoke at Gitugi Market in Mathioya Constituency, Murang’a County, where he toured alongside leaders of the United Opposition and acknowledged what he said was a warm reception from residents.
“It shall be remembered who stood with the people of Kenya during our darkest hour,” he said, accusing the government of failing to protect public institutions and uphold the country’s supreme law.
He was accompanied by Narc-Kenya leader Martha Karua, former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa, JB Muturi, Omingo Magara and Democracy for the Citizens Party deputy leader Senator Cleophas Malala, among others.
The leaders said the opposition was engaging wananchi across the country to rally support for governance reforms, improved service delivery and respect for the Constitution.
Mr Gachagua said the mood on the ground reflected growing public frustration with the state of the economy and public services, adding that the opposition would continue to organise countrywide engagements to push for accountability.
