The Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party has approved a raft of key leadership changes as it seeks to reposition and revitalise the opposition outfit amid shifting political dynamics.
In a joint session held on Monday, February 2, 2026, the coalition’s Council and National Executive Committee endorsed the appointments under the chairmanship of former President Uhuru Kenyatta, who is also the coalition’s chairperson. The meeting brought together senior leaders from across the alliance to review the coalition’s political posture and internal structures.
Following the session, Azimio appointed Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka as the coalition’s Party Leader, Suba MP Caroli Omondi as Secretary General, and former Nairobi Town Clerk Philip Kisia as Executive Director. The decisions have since been formally communicated to the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP), giving them legal effect.
Coalition leaders said the changes were driven by evolving political circumstances that demanded “prompt and strategic leadership enhancements” to strengthen Azimio’s internal coordination and public engagement.
In a statement issued after the meeting, the coalition said the new leadership team would play a central role in fostering cohesion and effectiveness within Azimio as it advances its national agenda. “The overarching aim is to reposition and revitalise the Azimio la Umoja coalition, fostering greater unity and organisational effectiveness,” the statement said.
Mr Musyoka’s appointment as Party Leader places him at the political helm of the coalition at a time when opposition parties are recalibrating ahead of future electoral contests and parliamentary battles. Hon. Omondi, a lawyer and experienced legislator, is expected to oversee the coalition’s day-to-day political and administrative affairs as Secretary General, while Mr Kisia will manage operational execution as Executive Director.
The coalition reaffirmed its commitment to inclusive and principled politics, saying the leadership changes were not merely cosmetic but part of a broader effort to strengthen its role as a national political force. “Azimio remains committed to inclusive, principled and forward-looking governance in service to all Kenyans,” the statement said.
Azimio la Umoja was formed as a broad-based coalition bringing together several political parties and movements. The latest leadership reshuffle signals an attempt by the alliance to sharpen its organisational edge, consolidate unity among its partners, and present a more coordinated front in the country’s evolving political landscape.
