Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has condemned the fatal shooting of a 28-year-old man in Kitengela, accusing President William Ruto’s administration of presiding over what he termed “senseless and needless killings.”

In a statement on Sunday, Sifuna said it had been confirmed that Vincent Ayomo was shot dead by police officers during protests in Kitengela on Saturday.

“It has now been confirmed that one person lost their life in Kitengela yesterday. The Police shot and killed 28-year-old Vincent Ayomo. This is another senseless and needless killing by Ruto’s regime,” Sifuna said.

According to residents and local leaders, chaos erupted in parts of Kitengela after youth staged demonstrations over alleged harassment and arrests by security officers. Witnesses claimed police opened fire as they attempted to disperse the crowd, fatally injuring Ayomo. The exact circumstances of the shooting remain unclear, and it was not immediately established whether the victim was part of the protest or a bystander.

Sifuna, who is also the Secretary-General of the Orange Democratic Movement, travelled to Kitengela alongside a team of opposition leaders and local activists to condole with the family and assess the situation on the ground. The visit, his office said, was also aimed at demanding accountability from security agencies and offering solidarity to residents who have complained of police brutality.

“We send our condolences to Vincent’s family and demand for justice and accountability. This is exactly what we are fighting against,” Sifuna said during the visit.

The delegation met Ayomo’s relatives and addressed residents, vowing to push for investigations into the incident and to raise the matter in Parliament. Sifuna said the opposition would not remain silent in the face of what he described as a growing pattern of excessive use of force by law enforcement officers.

Kitengela, a rapidly expanding town in Kajiado County, has in recent months experienced tension between sections of residents and police over crime crackdowns and enforcement operations. Human rights groups have previously raised concerns about heavy-handed policing and alleged extrajudicial killings in urban centres.

Efforts to obtain a comment from the National Police Service on the shooting were unsuccessful by the time of publication.

Ayomo’s death is likely to intensify scrutiny on police conduct and deepen the political debate over security operations under the current administration, as leaders across the divide weigh in on the incident.
