Tension escalated on Saturday, February 21, 2026, in Mbale, Vihiga County, after violence broke out ahead of a planned Linda Mwananchi rally.
The event was associated with Edwin Sifuna, the embattled Secretary General of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).
According to reports from the scene, a middle-aged man suspected of being among individuals allegedly hired to disrupt the rally was cornered by members of the public before the meeting began. The crowd reportedly descended on him using stones, killing him on the spot.
Another Suspect Seriously Injured
A second suspected disruptor was also apprehended at the venue and sustained serious injuries. Members of the public reportedly recovered crude weapons, including a knife and a machete, from him.
The circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation, and authorities are expected to provide further details.
Rising Political Tensions
The violence highlights growing political tensions surrounding the Linda Mwananchi rallies, which have drawn both strong support and opposition in different regions.
Incidents of mob justice continue to raise concern among leaders and human rights groups, who have repeatedly called for suspects to be handed over to law enforcement agencies rather than subjected to violence.
As political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 General Election, security at rallies and public gatherings is likely to remain a key concern for both organisers and authorities.
