Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has intensified his political offensive against President William Ruto, declaring that the battle to “liberate” Kenya will ultimately be decided by the ballot.
In a strongly worded statement after a political rally in Kisii Town, Gachagua said Kenyans were increasingly frustrated by what he described as economic mismanagement and a decline in the country’s standing on the global stage.
“Our ultimate victory in the quest for the liberation of the people of Kenya is about the people,” he said. “In the words of the people, the voice of a people oppressed but with the power of the ballot, there will be no alternative route for this regime so deliberately destroying our economy and making Kenya a laughing stock in the league of nations.”
The former deputy president, who was impeached last year following a bitter fallout within the ruling coalition, said the reception he received in Kisii County reflected the public mood across the country.
“We have witnessed a strong voice from the people of Kisii County. It is in listening to the people that we rule and give priority to what it is that matters them,” he said.
The Kisii meeting brought together several senior opposition leaders, signalling what could shape into a broad political alliance ahead of the 2027 General Election. Among those present were former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, DAP-K party leader Eugene Wamalwa and former Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Peter Munya.
Gachagua thanked the leaders and “tens of elected leaders” who attended the rally, praising their “courage and commitment to ONE TERM.”
His remarks signal an early and coordinated effort to consolidate opposition against President Ruto, with the economy emerging as the central campaign theme.
With just over a year since the last election, political temperatures appear to be rising, and alliances are beginning to crystallise as the race to 2027 slowly gathers momentum.
