Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has condemned the fatal shooting of a man in Kitengela, linking the incident to a police operation that dispersed his rally earlier in the day.
In a statement on Monday, Babu Owino said Vincent Oyamo was shot dead by police officers on February 15, 2026, just hours after chaos erupted at a political rally he had addressed in Kitengela.
“We strongly condemn the tragic killing of Vincent Oyamo, who was shot dead by police on 15 February 2026,” Owino said. “He was fatally shot just hours after our rally in Kitengela was forcibly dispersed by the same police officers.”
The MP claimed that police officers moved in to break up the gathering, triggering tension in the area. It was not immediately clear what led to the shooting of Oyamo or the circumstances under which he was shot.
Owino called on the Inspector General of Police to institute what he termed as a “thorough, independent and transparent investigation” into the incident.
“We urgently call on the Inspector General of Police to launch a thorough, independent, and transparent investigation into this incident. Those responsible must be identified and held accountable without delay,” he said.
The lawmaker added that justice must be served for Oyamo and his family, insisting that the matter should not be swept under the rug.
By Monday evening, the National Police Service had not issued an official statement on the shooting. Efforts to reach local police commanders in Kitengela for comment were unsuccessful.
The incident is likely to heighten scrutiny over the conduct of police officers during political gatherings, especially amid rising tensions in parts of the country. Human rights groups have in the past accused security agencies of using excessive force while dispersing crowds, claims police have repeatedly denied.
Vincent Oyamo’s death now adds to a growing list of civilians killed in confrontations involving law enforcement, raising fresh questions about accountability and the rules governing the use of force.
