The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission has concluded training of clerks ahead of the February 26, 2026 by-elections, saying it is fully prepared to conduct polls following the deaths of sitting representatives.
The Isiolo South parliamentary seat became vacant after the passing of the area MP, while the county assembly positions in West Kabras Ward (Malava Constituency, Kakamega County) and Muminji and Evurore wards (Mbeere North Constituency, Embu County) also fell vacant after the deaths of the respective ward representatives. Under the Constitution and Elections Act, by-elections must be held within 90 days of a seat falling vacant.
Addressing the readiness of the Commission, IEBC Vice Chairperson Fahima Araphat said the clerks who will oversee the polls have taken the Oath of Secrecy, committing to uphold integrity, impartiality and professionalism.
“It’s all systems go as the Commission successfully concludes the training of clerks ahead of the 26th February 2026 by-elections,” she said, emphasizing the agency’s pledge to deliver free, fair and credible elections.
IEBC Acting Commission Secretary and CEO Moses Sunkuli said the agency is in the final stages of preparations, including voter sensitisation and logistics, to ensure every eligible voter exercises their democratic right.
The mini-polls are a critical test ahead of the 2027 General Election, as the Commission seeks to demonstrate its capacity to manage elections transparently and efficiently amid heightened political activity across the country.
