A digital platform launched by Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna to mobilise citizens around governance issues briefly went offline after what he described as “malicious attacks” soon after its debut.
Sifuna said the website, Lindamwananchi.com, attracted thousands of users within hours of going live, signalling strong public interest in the initiative that he has framed as a civic platform for Kenyans concerned about governance and accountability.
“What a start! Lindamwananchi.com went live yesterday and thousands of you signed up. That’s the energy we need,” Sifuna said in a message posted on social media.
But the enthusiasm was quickly overshadowed by technical challenges, which the Nairobi Senator attributed partly to cyberattacks targeting the new platform.
“Expectedly there were thousands of malicious attacks on the website as well as hundreds of positive feedback on how we can improve,” he said.
The platform has since been taken offline temporarily to address the technical issues and incorporate suggestions from users who had already signed up.
“We have taken the site offline to address the issues and incorporate your ideas. We ask for your patience kidogo tu,” Sifuna said.
The launch comes at a time when Sifuna has emerged as one of the most vocal critics of President William Ruto’s administration, frequently using social media and public forums to challenge government policy and rally opposition voices.
Political observers say the Linda Mwananchi initiative could become a digital mobilisation tool aimed at organising citizens around governance concerns, especially as the political temperature in the country continues to rise.
The development also comes amid heightened political activity between rival camps, with allies of President Ruto recently stepping up grassroots mobilisation efforts across the country.
Sifuna has not disclosed the full scope of the platform but hinted that it is designed to give citizens a space to organise, share ideas and participate in civic action.
Even as the site remains offline for upgrades, the ODM official thanked supporters for the strong response to the launch.
“On behalf of the entire team, thank you so much,” he said.
