Traders at Toi Market in Kibra Constituency are counting losses after a fire destroyed numerous stalls early Monday morning. The blaze reportedly began near Toi Primary School and spread rapidly through densely packed wooden stalls, leaving many traders unable to salvage their merchandise.
Kibra MP Peter Orero expressed solidarity with affected traders, calling Toi Market the backbone of the local economy. “My heart goes out to the many traders who have lost their livelihoods and property in this blaze. We are committed to standing with you,” Orero said.
Students at Toi Primary School were released early as a precautionary measure, though the MP assured parents that the school was not under threat.
Witnesses reported that the fire spread quickly, engulfing sections of the busy market. Some traders criticized the response time of emergency services, claiming that firefighters arrived late. However, the flames were eventually contained, preventing the disaster from spreading to nearby homes or institutions.
Authorities are yet to determine the cause of the fire, with investigations expected to commence shortly. Toi Market has a history of devastating fires, with previous incidents in 2024 leaving traders struggling to recover.
Orero called on residents to remain calm and cooperate with emergency teams while recovery and support efforts continue. He pledged that the government, community leaders, and relevant agencies would work together to assist traders and prevent similar disasters in the future.
