A Social Media Movement Takes Root
Kenyan Gen Z is redefining civic engagement by turning voter registration into a social media trend. The #NikoKadi campaign, which gained momentum on TikTok before spreading to other platforms, encouraged young people to not only register but also motivate friends and family to do the same.
Activists Willie Oeba and Allans Ademba spearheaded the initiative on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, targeting 600 new voter registrations. By the end of the day, the effort had surpassed expectations, with 641 new voters registered in Kasarani.
Youth Ready to Shape the Ballot
Organisers say the campaign signals a broader youth movement ready to influence Kenya’s political landscape in the 2027 elections. Many young participants proudly displayed their voter registration cards, declaring “tuko kadi” as a symbol of their commitment.
Interviews with the registrants revealed a shared determination to use their vote to drive meaningful change. The organisers emphasised that mobilising digitally, whether through data or Wi-Fi, can translate into tangible results on the ground.
Honouring a Legacy Through Civic Action
Ademba noted that the initiative also serves as a tribute to those who lost their lives during the 2024 protests, framing voter registration as both a civic duty and a way to honour past struggles. He promised continued efforts to protect the vote and sustain the momentum generated by the campaign.
