Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has led tributes following the death of former Kirinyaga Senator Daniel Karaba, describing him as a dedicated public servant and an influential figure in Kenya’s education and political landscape.
In a condolence message, Gachagua mourned Karaba as “a renowned representative of the people and a great teacher,” highlighting his lifelong commitment to public service and community development.
“Senator Karaba was a people-person; he devoted his life to the service of the people not only of Kirinyaga Central and Kirinyaga County but also the people of Kenya,” Gachagua said.
Karaba served as Kirinyaga Senator between 2013 and 2017, during the first term of Kenya’s devolved system under the Senate of Kenya. In the House, he was known for his measured contributions and focus on legislation affecting counties, particularly on governance and resource allocation.
Before joining elective politics, Karaba had a long career in education, rising to become Secretary General of the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT). In that role, he was at the centre of negotiations over teachers’ welfare, pay disputes and education reforms, earning a reputation as a firm but pragmatic union leader.
His transition into politics saw him elected to represent Kirinyaga County, where he built a reputation as a grassroots mobiliser with close ties to constituents. Even after losing his Senate seat, Karaba remained active in public discourse, occasionally weighing in on education policy and national politics.
Leaders from across the political divide have begun sending messages of condolence, remembering him as a calm and principled leader who maintained close ties with his constituents.
Gachagua extended his sympathies to the bereaved family and the people of Kirinyaga, acknowledging the loss as a significant blow to the region and the country.
“To his family, relatives, friends and the people of Kirinyaga, please accept my deepest sympathies at this difficult moment,” he said.
He added: “May the Almighty God comfort you and give you strength. May the soul of Senator Karaba rest in eternal peace and perpetual light shine upon him forever.”
Karaba’s death comes at a time when Kenya has been losing several veteran politicians and educationists who played key roles in shaping both governance and public sector reforms. His passing is expected to draw tributes from leaders, teachers and residents who interacted with him during his decades of service.
Burial arrangements are yet to be announced.
